It's official NASCAR is heading to the 24 Hours of Le Mans! This year's Garage 56 entry will be occupied by none other than a modified Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 stock car, and the car was revealed today at Daytona International Speedway ahead of the Daytona 500. The car still utilizes a powerful 5.8-liter V-8 engine, but it has been outfitted with a larger fuel cell, upgraded brakes, and unique aerodynamic elements. It's also been lightened to 2960 pounds, and will ride on specialized Goodyear Eagle tires.
The decorated driver lineup will feature Jimmie Johnson, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Mike Rockenfeller, two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, and Jenson Button, 2009 Formula 1 world champion. The team has been testing the Camaro since last August, logging over 3600 miles at various race tracks, and they'll be heading back to Sebring this Monday for an endurance test. Once approved by the race's regulatory body, the Camaro will take on the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, on Saturday, June 10th.
It's going to be an incredible race, and we can't wait to see how the Camaro fares against the competition.
