It's been an incredible 10+ years for McLaren since they made their F1 the be-all and end-all for enthusiasts in the 90s. Their lineup of supercars like the MP4-12C, 570S, Senna, and 720S have all been well-received, yet they have all been quite similar. Now, the storied Formula 1 brand is introducing a brand new model, the Artura. It's not just another reboot, it's a revolutionary new car.
McLaren manufactured the car's carbon-fiber tub in-house at their carbon-fiber factory in Sheffield, England, making it even lighter and stronger than before. The engine is a 120-degree 577-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, which is much lighter than the previous V-8s they used. The eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle is similarly small, but also now incorporates McLaren's first ever electronically controlled limited-slip differential. The front suspension still uses control arms, but the rear is now a multilink design said to improve stiffness and reduce deflection.
The Artura's silhouette is pure speed, and is 3443 pounds, lighter than a Corvette Z06. It handles great, and can reach 60 mph in 2.6 seconds. It can also run up to 13.5 miles in electric-only mode and has an EPA electric-only range of 11 miles.
This new car launch was almost the end for McLaren, as they had to leverage their historic racers to pay for the expensive development of a new electrical architecture and plug-in-hybrid engineering. However, the Artura is well worth the wait. With its amazing performance and low price point, it's sure to be a hit.
