Have you ever wondered how such an ordinary car, the Toyota Supra, could sell for $500,000? Well, the answer lies in the ‘Fast and Furious effect’. When the first movie came out in 2001, this Japanese sports coupe was worth $40,000. Fast-forward twenty years and the same car, a 1994 Toyota Supra, was bought at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas for $500,000.
This wasn’t just any Supra, however – it was one of the clones created by the production team for filming sequences with stunt drivers. It has a 330-horsepower, 3.0-liter engine, is painted with the now-iconic orange and green livery, and sports a giant wing at the back. It’s also upholstered in black leather and blue suede.
This increase in value can be attributed to the popularity of the Fast and Furious franchise and the tragic death of Paul Walker in 2013 before Furious 7 was finished. Not only has the Supra become an unattainable holy grail, but so have other Japanese sports cars such as the Nissan Skyline, the Mazda RX-7, and the Nissan Silvia.
The latest installment of the Fast and Furious franchise is just around the corner, so we’re all wondering what cars the movie will feature and what will be the next to skyrocket in value. So far, the only hint is the Nissan Z, which will feature with the iconic VeilSide livery. We’ve also seen muscle cars driven by Dom, and a vintage Alfa driven by Han.
So if you want to get ahead of the curve, now would be a good time to get your hands on a Nissan Z as it’s still priced just over sticker. Take advantage of the ‘Fast and Furious effect’ while you can!
